I Hope You Never Lose Your Sense of Wonder

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder

These two photos by Allinger Photography (all other photos in this post by me on my cell phone unless otherwise stated), our Fuelie team launching a giant weather balloon. Out weather team launches these in sync with many stations around the globe twice a day.

You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger

Our galley is stocked with food and open 24/7…. watch out, it can get slippery when we’re mopping!

May you never take one single breath for granted

If you’ve ever worn a respirator you’ll know the sensation I’m describing because it’s similar. Sometimes the wind is just too strong for you to breathe casually through your nose, you actually have to put effort into changing the direction of the air around you. It’s such a weird sensation that I actually enjoy when that happens….

God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I am slowly developing a love for all things loose-leaf tea related. However, as a team, we have now broken three French presses. *crosses fingers* whenever we get mail again (we haven’t received packages since July) I should have one waiting for me. Thanks, Amazon!

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean

The sunsets here have been ridiculously gorgeous. This was last night. I need to get my good camera out for a few of them so I can gets some even more breathtaking shots. All that flat snow you see is the Ross Sea. In the summer the ice will break off and blow out and all of this will be open water… I’m sure I’ll have more photos for you then.

Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens

The doors on our “Grab ‘n Go” fridge just won’t stay closed!

Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance

Faith.jpg

This is the McMurdo Chapel. I believe it’s non-denominational although don’t quote me on that as I’ve never actually been inside. I know there are a few different events that meet there during the week including a Bible Study group, Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Dance party at Gallagher’s Pub!

I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance

Mountaings.jpg

Since there are already “real” mountains in my chapel photo, I decided to share here two types of mountains in my daily life…. In the foreground is one of the “mountains” of snow piled up around town from our folks clearing off roadways and paths. In the background you see Observation Hill (Ob Hill). It’s a hiking trail. I’ve done a loop around the mid-section but I haven’t yet been able to make it to the top. It’s a fitness goal of mine. It’s also where I plan to say goodbye to Lyon. For those of you that know what that means, feel free to message me for more details.

Never settle for the path of least resistance

KevinNateNate 3nate 2

These photos I stole from Kevin’s and Nate’s Facebook pages. Hopefully they won’t mind. Some buildings on station get hit with drifts harder than others and we have to dig out the doors. These were taken after a two-day wind storm in town blowing around all the ancient snow. The fourth picture is what it looked like when they were done!

Livin’ might mean takin’ chances, but they’re worth takin’

Mistakes.jpg

Alcohol…chances…. somehow I can make this photo fit the lyric, right? This is the McMurdo bar selection. Pick a liquor. Pick a can. We’ll dump some of each into a red cup for $4. Boom. Easiest bartending gig ever. You want a Long Island Ice Tea? Just leave.

Lovin’ might be a mistake, but it’s worth makin’

Don’t fall in love with using Frosty Boy soft serve in your coffee every morning as creamer. The machine will go out of order on you  for motnhs at a time and you will lose all hope.

Don’t let some Hellbent heart leave you bitter

IMG_20170826_174203

Someone made him this patch when he spent the entire winter at the South Pole Station. Don’t worry…. he’s not actually bitter. Kind of.

When you come close to sellin’ out, reconsider

IMG_20170824_204915

We were the only three people to show up actually in costume to the costume party… but I’m okay with that. We all were.

IMG_20170815_210149

This one gets a second photo. McMurdo Station is all about the science. That’s what we’re all here for. Over the winter the station is in “just keep it running” mode so the number of scientists is extremely low. Sometimes it’s easy to forget why we’re all here. At some point this winter we hosted a science fair. You can see here some of the neat exhibits created by the support (aka non-scientists) staff. The first one on the left is “Winterover Skin Versus Death Ray Sun”. The next was all about the most populous names on station. For men it was Steve and Andrew. Women was Kristen and Rebecca. There was even a build-your-own volcano table!

Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance

The first major nebulous clouds of the season!

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance….

00002IMG_00002_BURST20171003220043_COVER

Okay, to be fair we weren’t dancing this night. We were attending a McMurdo Live Read. You see, we don’t have a movie theatre in town. Instead, volunteers each took up a role in a movie and did a live reading of the script on stage! Last time they did Bridesmaids. The night pictured here was The Other Guys. It was super neat.

Stay tuned for next week’s…..

In December drinking horchata

It’s definitely horchata in that trivia trophy at the toga party. Nothing else. I swear. Also it was definitely December. *cough*

I’d look psychotic in a balaclava

Anne Alise and I about to “brave” Condition 2 weather outside.

Winter’s cold is too much to handle

IMG_20170830_112459

Winter’s cold isn’t actually too much to handle. I think now that I’ve made it through a winter in Antarctica I could make it through one just about anywhere. Pictured here is Leala and me after shoveling snow at the airfield for an hour or so. I love ice-crystal eyelashes! So fun!

Pincher crabs that pinch at your sandals

Proteins (1)

…. I was GOING to go outside and take a photo of me wearing sandals in the snow but then I got too lazy. Instead you get a photo featuring crab legs from our Midwinter Dinner. I think I already posted this photo but I don’t care.

……just kidding. I won’t put you through another post like this. Probably.

Lyrics: “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack and “Horchata” by Vampire Weekend

PS for those of you that commented on my Facebook post about having a draft ready to post telling me “just post it and add the photos later” …. that would have made this post really confusing xD

  1. Your blog is amazing. I love the photos and commentary. You are so talented and as I have said since you wrote that lovely long publish worthy story in 3rd grade (that the teacher thought had to be plagerized…lol) you truly should be a writer…..love you
