“This is So Weird”

I think Erica put it best on the phone today when she said, “wait, this whole thing, it’s like, becoming real now… this is so weird.”

I had called her to let her know that I received a phone call from one of the Gana-A’Yoo recruiters about a few positions (okay, the GSC lady was returning my voice message from a few days ago). I also received an email from another one of the GSC recruiters in response to a resume/cover letter I’d sent over on Friday.  We also talked about the lady at Best Recycling I spoke with on the phone about the positions available for both summer and winter.

Submitting an application to an online portal and letting it float away into the ether is so much different than messaging back recruiters on LinkedIN and talking to them on the phone. This whole thing, it’s like, becoming real now. This is so weird.

Erica is the one that first introduced me to the idea of moving to Antarctica to work. This has been her dream much longer than it has been mine.  I feel like I stole her enthusiasm for the idea and ran with it and made it mine own.  This idea, this concept, of moving to Antarctica is such a long-shot opportunity but I talk about it to anyone that is interested as if it’s a for-sure thing. I’m that deeply invested in trying to make it happen.

I know that if I don’t get a job there for this upcoming season I’ll try again the next. And the next.

And I know that if I get a job there for this upcoming season I’ll reapply for the next. And the next.

I love how many of my friends have become intrigued enough by this idea to apply to go with me as well.  I mean, it’s a long-shot that ANY of us get a position, let alone all 10-ish of my friends that are now looking into it… but how awesome would that be if we all made it onto the ice this year! We can start a band and play at Icestock 😀
